Circle of confusion
![]()
This months gallery ties up to Eugene's article about
Photography terminology:- Grain Granular texture appearing to some degree in all processed photographic materials. In black and white photographs, the grains are minute particles of black metallic silver that constitute the image. In colour photographs, the silver has been removed chemically, but tiny blotches of dye retain the appearance of graininess. The faster the film, the coarser the texture of the grain. Grain may be undesirable that aim to convey maximum sharpness and detail, but it can also produce arresting pictorial effects that are appropriate for the subject, conveying intimacy, for example in candid shots. The term granularity is applied to the objective measurement of grain, the term graininess to its subjective assessment. GHOST Abbreviation for Gosudarstvenny Obshchesoyuzny Standart (Soviet Government All Union standard), used to designate a rating system for film speed which was used in the USSR and some Eastern European countries. GHOST is a mathematical system similar to ASA. Circle of confusion Disk of light on the image, formed by the lens from points of light in the subject. The smaller these disks are in the image, the sharper it appears. Once they reach a size that can be perceived as disks rather than points, that part of the image is considered to be unsharp.
